DECEMBER SPECIAL GUESTS – AMERICAN TREAT

Today I would like to introduce you the December Special GuestsAnnaPietro, and Pizzi – my crazy cousins!

We have traveled the world together… OK, we only visited the States together, but it’s just because we love the States! We went to NYC, to San Diego, to Las Vegas, and (almost) to Denver. So, when they came to Belgium last week-end, right after Thanksgiving, I thought I would cake them with a very American dessert ( – ;

As I mentioned some days ago, Thanksgiving is the right occasion to gather the family around a table and eat all sorts of delicacies – pumpkin pies, mashed potatoes with gravy, special brown beans, apple pies, turkey, cranberry sauce and more – so my idea was to choose two of these delicacies and bake them:

NOVEMBER SPECIAL GUEST – L’OREA CAKE

Hi Guys! Today you will meet the November Special Guest, our friend LAURA!

Let me describe her through the cake I baked for her, the L’orea Cake.

The L’orea Cake is the feminine version of the Oreo cookies. It is feminine as Laura who is a typical young woman from Milan: blonde (natural please!), tall, slim, perfect in every situation, at ease in any dress, glamour, chic, a bit retro, the pure beauty… ingenuously.

The L’orea Cake is a chocolate – double/triple chocolate – cake. I know chocolate is her peché mignon, her weakness, her favourite food. I know chocolate is without doubts what she would bring to a desert island if she was asked to choose.

The L’orea Cake has several moist and firm layers, exactly like our Special Guest who hides behind her sweet and open smile, a strong temperament.

The L’orea Cake is filled with a white pudding that represents the pure white heart of our friend Laura and her goodness.

The L’orea Cake‘s taste is amazing and explosive like Laura who is overwhelming, sincere, cheerful, and so much more.

OCTOBER SPECIAL GUESTS – BEER MUFFINS

We continue with the monthly post dedicated to our SPECIAL GUESTS. The month of October is consecrated to a couple, let’s clap our hands foooooooooooor:

ELEONORA AND MARIO!

They are a very sparkly couple. They met through a common friend, and then they met again by chance at a punk concert where he offered her a beer. Aaaaaaaaaah love for the hop can open a lot of doors; in this case it opened the main entrance of Mario and Eleonora’s heart.

Mario fell for the amber and candied Eleonora, she couldn’t resist his honest eyes and their love story started! Their relationship has the typical flavour of the spontaneous fermentation, the complex aromas and the vinous taste of the Iris beer from the Cantillon brewery which is also the favourite beer of our couple ( – ;

I met them with an Iris in our hand, so it was quite obvious to dedicate a beer inspired dessert to them:

When I baked these muffins I was far from my Belgian kitchen, I had no special frosting or ingredients available, but the recipe was really a bomb, so the result was quite tasteful. Would you like to try it? Please visit the “Why I am not skynny” blog.

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL GUEST – CAKEMILLA

Some days ago I finally went to visit the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition in Brussels. It is a very complete overview around the Florentine master gathering many fascinating works and objects created or imagined by Leonardo.

A whole room is dedicated to Mona Lisa, you can find there the results of unprecedented studies of this masterpiece: amazing revelations! But the portrait that I found the most touching during the visit was definitely the “Lady with an Ermine”. As soon as I saw it, I found the inspiration for the September Special Guest: Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiz!

There are several interpretations of the significance of the ermine in this portrait. The ermine, a stoat in its winter coat, was a traditional symbol of purity because it was believed an ermine would face death rather than soil its white coat… A bit like Camilla (in Tiziana’s arms in the picture above) who is so sweet, innocent, and picky that she is basically a tanned ermine ah ah ah

But the undisputed main character of this painting is of course the Lady! The Lady has been identified with reasonable certainty as Cecilia Gallerani, renowned for her beauty, her scholarship, and her poetry. What a coincidence, she resembles precisely to Tiiiiiiiz with her Mediterranean beauty, her refined manners, and her elegant and bourgeois Neapolitan accent ( – ;

It’s to our friend, the Lady with a Dog, that I dedicate my last creation:

AUGUST SPECIAL GUEST – iPAD CAKE

Today I would like to introduce you one of my most passionate friends in Brussels: Dado!

Dado comes from Sicily and, like all the people from this island, he is full of energies and joy. He looks a bit like a Barbary fig, a common Sicilian fruit, because he is sweetly pulpy and dangerously thorny. But he is also very funny, very proud of his region and very creative both in cooking and in loving ( – ;

Let’s talk about cooking this time, we’ll talk about his loving talents another time ah ah

During the last few months, Dado delighted me and our friends with marvelous delicacies such as his peppers lasagna, the 6000 rice balls (arancini) and the vegan wedding catering that we prepared together, the delicious Easter chicken and many many many others…

We really cannot deny that Dado is a master chef!!

At a certain point I thought I would always be his assistant, his pupil ) – ; But one day he called me asking for help for a special cake. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees, Dado, for you I will strip off my recipe book!!

So, even if 2300 km were between us because Dado was already on holidays in his lovely Catania, a couple of weeks ago the iPAD CAKE was born:

JULY SPECIAL GUEST – BISCUITS

My Gaelluccia, my Gioia, she is the apple of my eyes and def’ the person who knows me best in this world.

Gaelluccia is so dynamic, so pragmatic, and so fit!

Gaelluccia is so different than me and so close to me even if she lives miiiiiiles away!

Gaelluccia taught me so many important things in the last 15 years…

For example she showed me that you build your happiness day by day and that luck doesn’t exist, she coached me on how to hear and reproduce French accents, she opened my eyes after a very bad romantic disappointment, she is the living proof that between real friends giving is way more important than receiving, she enlightened me on very strange words in the Sicilian dialect (ciuozzi??), and she also taught me funny American acronyms such as FUPA and PHAT ( – :

Gaelluccia brings with this recipe another capital lesson: biscuits are named like this because they are cooked twice (twice= bis in Latin), aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesome!

So, this month, the very very very SPECIAL GUEST is you, Gioiuzza!

Ingredients :

500 gr Flour

175 gr Semolina (mais)

1.5 Teaspoon baking powder

1 Teaspoon salt

3 Eggs

250 gr Sugar

1 Tablespoon orange peel

1 Tablespoon lemon peel

500 gr Chocolate (melted)

2 Tablespoons Nesquick

Recipe: In a bowl whisk all the dry ingredients except the sugar, then add the dry ingredients to the eggs that you have beaten with the sugar. Finally add lemon and orange peels, let the dough rest for about 10 minutes. Divide now the dough into two parts and bake them in the oven (180 degrees) for about 30 minutes. Remove them from the oven and after 5 minutes cut them in little cookies. Bake the cookies in the oven again for 20 minutes. When they are cold, dip them in the melted chocolate.

JUNE SPECIAL GUEST – PIIIIINK

Ciao Guys! Guess who the June Special Guest is???

Yep, it’s me, your favourite sweet and spicy blogger!

After a looooooooooooong preparation, finally the day of my 35th birthday arrived and for this special occasion I decided to bake a loooot: brownies, muffins, mini dulche de leche, chocolate flowers, pink chocolate cookies and even TWO birthday cakes (STRAWBERRY cakes as per our survey)!

ImageDon’t worry, I didn’t eat everything by myself ( – : Yesterday I invited to my place several friends and food critics who tasted my delicious creations and answered to a simple question: What is the adjective that describes Eva best? This is the result: The top  adjectives are cheerful, explosive, generous and Italian. Then my friends described me as sexy bomb, bright, chou (merci Cind’!), captivating, Desperate Housewife, fantastic, happy, lively, impulsive (really???), unforgettable, always “high” (yes, cakes are my addiction!), funny, sweeeeet… I also received some subliminal notes such as “best cook ever but sometimes I want to kill her…” and “Very open to what you think”… I’ll leave this with you ( – :

DOU DOU WHOOPIES

whoopiesIngredients:

250 gr Flour

1 Teaspoon baking soda

1 Pinch salt

45 gr Cocoa powder

150 gr Sugar

1 Egg

120 ml Oil

1 Teaspoon vanilla extract

180 ml Milk

For the filling: 120 ml Milk + 180 gr Flour + 115 gr Butter + 75 gr Sugar + A pinch salt + 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract

Preparation: In a bowl sift together the flour, the baking soda, the salt, the cocoa powder, and the sugar. Set aside. Then in a medium bowl stir together the egg, the vanilla, the milk and he gradually add the sifted dry ingredients. Drop the dough by tablespoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets and bake 10 – 15 minutes in the preheated oven (175 degrees). Let them then cool completely.

Meanwhile prepare the filling: In a saucepan whisk together the milk and the flour, cook over medium heat, stir frequently until thick. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. In a medium bowl beat together the rest of the ingredients (see FILLING ingredients), add the cooked milk mixture, and beat for about 20 minutes.

Sandwich filling between 2 cookies and enjoy!

MAY SPECIAL GUEST – Les Misérables!

This month is def’ dedicated to Bianca, an extraordinary, colourful, and joyful person. Just looking at her makes you a happier person. She lives, she loves, she cooks and sometimes she rests.

“I’m a professional Life Couch and my motto is: Sofà, so good” or even “Bianca is a good fork (=a big eater), but she can also be a good knife and a good spoon”  are some of the famous statuses on Facebook that she uses to describe herself.

She also says about herself that she is a calamities magnet because she attracts all sort of peculiar and debatable characters who always turn out to be quite… miserable and wretched!

Sometimes she finds a prince charming who turns into a frog after the first kiss. Sometimes she meets a pitiful guy who turns into a toad after the first kiss… Let’s face the truth: it is only in fairy tales that frogs and toads change into nice guys! And this is how Bianca always ends up with a damaged soul.

She doesn’t want to become an asshole like her princes and even if she wanted to… She has learned that if you really want to be mean, you need to be born mean, otherwise the others win over you by experience.

Bianca, I want to offer you some MISÉRABLES (= which means “wretched” in English) that are, despite their name, very good and rich in sugar and fat. Hopefully they will help your damaged soul to heal a bit ( – :

APRIL SPECIAL GUEST – EATABLE FLOWERS

We continue with the monthly post dedicated to our Special Guests. This springy month is dedicated to MANU!

Manu is a wondrous person that I looove! And, like a cheerleader, I virtually scream: “Give me a M, give me a A, give me a N, give me a U!”

She is not only a generous, organised, spontaneous, pragmatic, peaceful, great friend. Manu is also the living proof that the right man exists! She found him and she built with him a marvellous family (( – ;

So, Manuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, alias my special Wonder Mom, it’s only for you and for your happy family that I baked this pot of eatable flowers.Manu v2

It took me two whole days to prepare it, but it was a big pleasure and I did it with all my affection!

MARCH SPECIAL GUEST – PAN DI STELLE CAKE

We continue with the monthly post dedicated to our Special Guests. This month is consecrated to REEEEEEEN!

Reeeeen was my first real friend in Brussels. A bit of a grouchy lady at first sight that I didn’t like straight away – probably because I thought she was dating a guy that I found interesting – but lively, fun, friendly, and outgoing. In one word: SPECIAL!

I got to know her, we became very close friends, and I learned a lot about her passions such as adventurous travelling, discovering the world through people, organising parties and surprises for her friends, falling in love with the most beautiful guys, and… enjoying the fantastic Pan di Stelle cookies!

Of course not the Pan di Stelle that she can find in Brussels, not even those she can buy when she travels to Italy, no! She only enjoys the Pan di Stelle chosen by her father especially for her in Turin (- :

And this is why, for her birthday some weeks ago, I decided to offer her a cake tailored for her:

FIRST SPECIAL GUEST – RAINBOW CAKEAle 2

Fantastic Ale! My colleague, my consultant, and my editor who didn’t hesitate a minute to accept when I bluntly asked him: “Ale, what about if I insert a new page in the blog, would you like to put your face there?”. Fantastic Ale who got caked just with the promise of a bespoke dessert for him ( – :

And the RAINBOW CAKE was born! It’s a colourful piece of art exuberant and sparkly like him, exaggerated like the worst hypochondriac that he can be, super good like his education at the Bocconi University, and class like when he matches his socks to his tie.

Thanks to Ale and his Rainbow Cake, we launch today a new page dedicated to… all the friends who are not scared of showing their face. Would you also like to be caked?? Contact me or break my heart, Mr Macho Man, and I will bake a cake to throw in your face ( – ;
